💊 How ART (Antiretroviral Therapy) Works
ART stands for Antiretroviral Therapy, a combination of medications used to treat HIV. It doesn’t cure HIV, but it controls it so well that the virus becomes undetectable and cannot be transmitted (known as U=U: Undetectable = Untransmittable).
🧬 What HIV Does (Without ART)
HIV attacks your CD4 cells (white blood cells that help fight infection).
Over time, it destroys the immune system, making it easy for infections and diseases to take over.
If untreated, this leads to AIDS.
💉 What ART Does
ART uses a mix of 2–3 or more drugs that:
1. Block the virus from multiplying.
2. Reduce the amount of HIV in the blood (called viral load) to very low or undetectable levels.
3. Give your immune system time to heal and grow stronger.
4. Prevent transmission of HIV to others (especially with undetectable viral load).
💊 How the Drugs Work
There are several classes of HIV drugs, each attacking the virus in different ways:
Drug Class What It Does
NRTIs (Nucleoside Reverse Transcriptase Inhibitors) Block the reverse transcriptase enzyme, stopping HIV from copying its RNA into DNA.
NNRTIs (Non-Nucleoside Reverse Transcriptase Inhibitors) Also block reverse transcriptase, but in a different way.
PIs (Protease Inhibitors) Stop the virus from assembling new copies of itself.
INSTIs (Integrase Inhibitors) Block the virus from inserting its DNA into your cells.
Entry/Fusion Inhibitors Stop the virus from entering your CD4 cells.
Most ART regimens today are in a single pill taken once daily, combining 2 or 3 of these drugs.
✅ What Happens When You Take ART Daily
HIV becomes undetectable in 3–6 months (in most cases).
You can live a long, healthy, normal life.
You won’t transmit HIV through sex.
You stay in Stage 1 or 2 — and never develop AIDS.
❌ What Happens If You Stop ART
HIV rebounds.
CD4 cells drop again.
Risk of infections and AIDS increases.
The virus can become resistant to medication.
