Guide to Making Homemade Bar Soap (Cold Process Method)
Making your own bar soap is a rewarding and creative process. The cold process method is one of the most popular techniques, involving mixing oils and lye at low temperatures. This method allows you to control the ingredients, scents, and colors, producing a high-quality, gentle soap that is often superior to commercial alternatives. This guide will walk you through the essential steps to make a basic batch of bar soap.

Bar Soap Recipe (Cold Process)
This recipe is for a small, simple batch of soap, perfect for beginners.
Ingredients:
- Lye (100% pure sodium hydroxide): 3.5 ounces (by weight)
- Distilled water: 8 ounces (by weight)
- Coconut oil: 10 ounces (by weight)
- Olive oil: 10 ounces (by weight)
- Palm oil: 10 ounces (by weight)
- Essential oil or fragrance oil: 1 ounce (optional)
- Colorant: Soap-making mica or natural colorants (optional)
Equipment:
- Safety goggles and rubber gloves
- Digital kitchen scale
- Heat-resistant containers (stainless steel or heavy-duty plastic)
- Stick blender (immersion blender)
- Silicone soap mold
- Stainless steel spoon or spatula
- Old towels or blankets
- Vinegar (for neutralizing lye spills)
Preparation
- Safety First: Put on your safety goggles and gloves. Ensure you are working in a well-ventilated area, preferably outdoors or near an open window. Keep your workspace clean and free of distractions. Have a bottle of vinegar nearby in case of a lye spill; it helps neutralize the lye.
- Measure Accurately: This is the most critical step. Use your digital scale to measure all your ingredients precisely by weight, not volume. Do not eyeball the measurements.
- Mix the Lye Solution: Pour the distilled water into a heat-resistant container. SLOWLY and GENTLY add the lye to the water, stirring with a stainless steel spoon. The mixture will heat up significantly and release fumes. Stir until the lye is fully dissolved. Set the lye solution aside in a safe place to cool down.
The Soap-Making Process
- Melt the Oils: In a separate pot, gently heat the coconut oil, olive oil, and palm oil together until they are fully melted and combined.
- Monitor Temperatures: The goal is to bring both the lye solution and the melted oils to a similar temperature, ideally between 100°F and 120°F (38°C - 49°C). Use a thermometer to monitor both. It's okay if they are a few degrees apart, but they should be within 10 degrees of each other.
- Combine the Lye and Oils: Once both the oils and lye solution have reached the target temperature, CAREFULLY and SLOWLY pour the lye solution into the pot of melted oils.
- Use a Stick Blender: Submerge your stick blender into the pot. Start blending in short bursts, moving the blender around to ensure a thorough mix. You are looking for "trace," which is the point where the mixture thickens to the consistency of a thin pudding. You will know it has reached trace when you lift the blender and a trail of the mixture leaves a visible mark on the surface.
- Add Fragrance and Color (Optional): Once you have reached trace, you can add your essential oils, fragrance oils, and colorants. Stir them in quickly and thoroughly.
- Pour into the Mold: Pour the soap batter into your silicone mold. Use a spatula to get every last bit out. Smooth the top with the spatula.
- Insulate and Wait: Cover the mold with a piece of cardboard or a lid and then wrap it in old towels or a blanket. This insulation helps the soap go through a process called gel phase, which ensures an even texture and a better final product. Let the soap sit for 24-48 hours.
- Unmold and Cut: After 24-48 hours, the soap should be firm enough to unmold. Carefully remove the soap from the mold. If it’s too soft, let it sit for another day. Cut the soap into bars using a sharp knife or a soap cutter.
- Cure: This is the final and most important step. Place the soap bars on a wire rack in a well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight. Let the soap cure for 4-6 weeks. During this time, the excess water will evaporate, and the soap will become harder, milder, and long-lasting.
