Learn the truth about deadlines, penalties, TIN registration, who must register, and how to do it easily from your phone—no stress, no scams.
Nigeria New Tax Rules

Confused about Nigeria’s new tax requirements? Learn the truth about deadlines, penalties, TIN registration, who must register, and how to do it easily from your phone—no stress, no scams.

There has been a lot of confusion and rumours about “a new tax starting on January 1st, 2026” in Nigeria. Let this blog post clear this up properly, step by step, in simple and accurate terms, so you don’t panic or get misled.

1️⃣ Has Nigeria introduced a new tax starting 1st January 2026?

NO new “overnight” tax is starting tomorrow.

What the government has done is:

  • Strengthen enforcement of existing taxes
  • Digitise tax registration and collection
  • Make Tax Identification Number (TIN) mandatory for more activities

So if you hear:

“Everyone must start paying tax from January 1”

👉 That is misleading.
Taxes already existed; enforcement is what’s increasing.

2️⃣ What exactly is becoming mandatory?

The key thing is TIN (Tax Identification Number).

From 2025–2026 onward, TIN is required for:

  • Opening or maintaining bank accounts
  • Running a business (online or physical)
  • Government contracts or benefits
  • Corporate registration
  • Some digital platforms & payment systems

⚠️ TIN registration is free

3️⃣ Is there a deadline?

There is NO single nationwide “tomorrow or else” deadline.

However:

  • Businesses are expected to already be registered
  • Self-employed & freelancers are strongly encouraged to register
  • Salary earners are usually registered by their employers

So:

  • No midnight deadline
  • No sudden arrest or fine for not registering today

4️⃣ Are there penalties?

Yes — but only if you are taxable and refuse to comply.

Possible penalties include:

  • Fines for registered businesses that don’t file returns
  • Bank account restrictions in some cases
  • Inability to access government or financial services
  • Back taxes (if you earned taxable income and ignored it)

🚫 No penalty for unemployed persons or people with no taxable income

5️⃣ Who MUST register?

You should register if you are:

✅ A business owner
✅ A freelancer (online or offline)
✅ A content creator earning income
✅ A trader, vendor, or artisan
✅ Self-employed (any kind)

You may not need to worry urgently if:

✔️ You are unemployed
✔️ You earn below taxable income
✔️ You are a student with no income

6️⃣ What are the requirements for registration?

For Individuals:

  • Full name
  • Phone number
  • Email address
  • Home address
  • Bank Verification Number (BVN) or National Identification Number (NIN) (sometimes requested)
  • Type of work or business

For Businesses:

  • Business name
  • CAC registration (if registered)
  • Business address
  • Owner’s details
  • Nature of business

7️⃣ Can it be done at home?

YES — 100%

No need to:

  • Know anybody
  • Pay an agent
  • Visit an office (unless there’s a technical issue)

8️⃣ Can it be done on a mobile phone?

YES

You can register using:

  • Android phone
  • iPhone
  • Laptop (optional)

9️⃣ How to register (simple steps)

Step 1: Visit the official site

Step 2: Choose registration type

  • Individual
  • Business

Step 3: Fill in your details

  • Correct name
  • Valid phone number & email

Step 4: Submit

  • Your TIN is generated
  • You may receive it via SMS or email

⏱️ Takes 5–15 minutes

💰 Cost: FREE

🔟 Do you need to pay tax immediately after registration?

❌ NO.

Registering does not mean instant payment.

You only pay:

  • If you earn taxable income
  • According to your income level
  • After filing returns

⚠️ Very important warning

🚫 Do NOT pay anyone claiming:

  • “Urgent tax registration fee”
  • “Tomorrow is last day or you’ll be fined”
  • “I can help you bypass tax”

These are scams.

🟢 Summary (Plain Truth)

✔️ No sudden new tax tomorrow
✔️ TIN registration is the main focus
✔️ Registration is free
✔️ Can be done at home with a phone
✔️ No penalty for people without income
✔️ Enforcement is gradual, not violent
